Highlights & Complete Results—6th Annual Elementary CC Run for Fun Races Clymore Elementary School, Fort Defiance October 22, 2011
FORT DEFIANCE— A record field of 90 area elementary-aged athletes from 18 different schools laced on their running shoes to compete in half-mile and one-mile cross country races Saturday on a crisp, sunny, ideal morning for racing.
Kindergarten through third-grade runners competed over a half-mile course on the athletic fields and rolling hills behind Clymore Elementary School, while fourth and fifth graders competed over a one-mile race course. The top five finishers in each of the 12 grade-level races received medals.
Three champions came from Lexington’s Waddell Elementary, while Clymore Elementary and North River Elementary each produced two race winners. One individual champion each also came from Cassell, Churchville, McSwain, Riverheads, and Westwood Hills Elementary schools. Two new meet records and several near-record performances were highlights of the event.
Summer Wallace of Riverheads Elementary turned in the most impressive performance of the day, winning the first-grade girls’ race in 3:49—a whopping 32 seconds faster than the previous record for the half-mile distance. On the boys’ side, Brian Zentz of Waddell set a new record in the second-grade race, winning in 3:15, six seconds better than the previous half-mile record mark. Zentz became the only multiple-record holder at the Run for Fun event, having also established the record for first-grade boys a year ago.
In the girls’ second-grade race, Eliza Dryden of Waddell—just 2 seconds off the record mark for a half mile—won in 3:47, while Addison Knicely of North River (6:46) was just 4 seconds off the boys’ fourth-grade record time for the one-mile race distance.
Other near-record performances were turned in by Faith Kurtz of Westwood Hills Elementary (10 seconds off the half-mile record in 3:43) who edged Clymore’s Sophia Chiles by a fraction of a second to win the girls’ third-grade race in the closest finish of the day. In fact, the first four medalists in that race all finished within five seconds of each other.
Additionally, Ryan Cook of Clymore Elementary (12 seconds off the 3rd-grade boys half-mile mark in 3:15), and Leo Vincent of Cassell Elementary (12 seconds off the 5th-grade boys’ one-mile record in 6:33) turned in near-record performances in their respective events.
