Highlights & Results: Labor Day Weekend 5K

Race Highlights: The first-ever Labor Day Weekend 5K was a memorable one on Saturday morning, with both the men’s and women’s overall titles decided in near photo finishes.

On the men’s side, Colin Gundling, 24, of McCandless, Pennsylvania held off Marshall Martin, 25, of Arlington by a scant three seconds for the overall title. Gundling quickly surged from a sizeable pack of early challengers to lead by the middle of the first lap of the park, and he seemed solidly in control by the two-mile mark. But over the last half mile, a hard charge by Marshall enabled him to close the gap just short of the win. Gundling clocked 17:00 for the 3.1-mile race, with Marshall just behind at 17:03. Also joining Gundling on the awards podium was his older brother, Ryan Gundling, 31, of Staunton, who was the men’s bronze medalist in 17:29.

The women’s race was even closer as high school freshman Kelci Miller, 14, held of Fort Defiance teammate Cameron Wade, 15, by just two seconds. Miller won in 21:59 with Wade finishing in 22:01 Both runners trailed Buffalo Gap freshman Grace Tankard, 14, for the first 2½ miles, but moved together past her on the uphill climb near the armory to set up a sprint to the finish over the last hundred yards. Miller’s winning time eclipsed the 11-14 age division mark set back in 2006 by 10 seconds, and she was quick to credit Wade, her sophomore teammate on the Indians cross country team, for the win. “Cameron encouraged me every time I was hurting and wanted to slow down, and she kept me hanging on when I didn’t think I could stay with her.” Tankard held on for the women’s bronze medal in 22:40.

A total of 78 finishers completed the two-and-a-third laps of Gypsy Hill Park in the final race of the Blue Ridge Road Runners’ spring and summer 5K race series.
