5th Annual March Madness 5K
Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Gypsy Hill Park

Race Highlights:

Despite a starting-time temperature in the just the upper 30's, 47 runners not only completed the March Madness 5K Saturday morning in Gypsy Hill Park, but several recorded superb times despite the cold conditions.  For the fifth consecutive year, the event served as the kickoff for the spring and summer 5K race series hosted in the park by the Blue Ridge Road Runners.

In what was a one-man show from the start, Pieter deHart, 32, of Lexington, cruised to the men’s overall title in 17:38—the fifth fastest time ever recorded for the men's 30-36 age division.  Silver medalist Brett VanLear, 39, of Fishersville, was a full minute behind deHart, but his 18:38 time was the fourth-fastest ever in the men's 37-45 age division.  Bronze medalist Dillon Harner of Staunton, 17, trailed VanLear by just nine seconds, finishing the two-and-one-third laps of the park in 18:47.

The women’s race also featured a commanding victory by 17-year-old Sophia Stone of Pacific Pallisades, California, whose winning time of 20:11 was the second-fastest ever recorded in the girls' 15-18 age division.  Runner-up Holly Breen, 23, a student at Mary Baldwin, was 52 seconds behind Stone in 21:03, the third-fastest for the women's 19-29 age division.  The bronze medalist was 15-year-old Grace Sheridan of Staunton, third in 22:05—the sixth-fastest time run by a girl in the 15-18 age division.

Other noteworthy performances came in the age division competition where Andi Miner ran the second-fastest 5K ever in the women’s 56-and-over division (27:46), while Gary Michael was equal to the task with a second-best-time ever of 20:26 in the men’s 56-and-over division.

The Blue Ridge Road Runners’ second 5K event of the summer, the Firecracker 5K, is set for 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 4, also in Gypsy Hill Park.  Entry information will be available at www.BlueRidgeRR.com.
