5th Annual Elementary CC Run for Fun Races

On a crisp, sunny, ideal morning for running, half of the 12 cross country races for local elementary school children ended with new record times Saturday morning at the fifth-annual “Cross Country Run for Fun” races hosted by the Blue Ridge Road Runners.  A total of 75 youngsters from 13 elementary schools competed over the school grounds of Clymore Elementary.  

Three champions each came from North River Elementary and Cassell Elementary, while Clymore produced two champions in the half-mile and one-mile races.  Four of the six girls’ races featured new record times.  

In the girls’ fourth-grade race, Caroline Mohler of North River had the day’s most impressive effort, shattering the previous one-mile record mark by a remarkable 29 seconds in 7:16.  She won by 34 seconds over Faerin Dick of Waddell Elementary in Lexington, the silver medalist in 7:50.  

The girls’ fifth-grade race featured not just one record-breaking performance, but three.  North River’s Faith Farley became the first girl ever under the seven-minute mark for the one-mile distance, winning in 6:58, 22 seconds faster than the previous record of 7:20.  Both silver-medalist Lindsay Simmons of Clymore (7:10) and bronze-medalist Abigail Shorkey of Cassell (7:11) also eclipsed the old record mark.

In the half-mile kindergarten girls’ race, Ellie Cook of Clymore opened the day with the first of the day’s new record times, claiming the gold medal in 4:11—23 seconds faster than the previous best time.  She won by 33 seconds over Emma Staley of Clymore, second in 4:44.  Tianna Lambert gave Clymore a sweep of the girls’ top three places as she claimed the bronze medal in 4:56.

The fourth record-setting girls’ performance came in the second-grade race won by Cassell’s Rachel Murie in 3:45, three seconds under the old mark for the half-mile distance.  She edged Clymore’s Sophia Chiles—who equaled the old record of 3:48—while Emma Riddle of Verona Elementary was just 10 seconds behind for the bronze medal in 3:58.

Two boys’ races also resulted in new record marks.  Not only was the boys’ third-grade race the most closely-contested of the day, but winner Addison Knicely of North River broke the half-mile division mark by 12 seconds.  He edged Churchville’s Tucker Kiracofe by just two-tenths of a second in a photo-finish as both were clocked in 3:03.

In the boys’ first-grade race, Bran Zentz of Waddell was 12 seconds under the old record time, winning the half-mile race in 3:35.  Runner-up Shannon Knicely of North River, who was eight-seconds behind Zentz, was also under the previous record time of 3:47.  

Other gold medalists in the girls’ races included Corrin Skates of Plains Elementary in Broadway— the first-grade race champion in 4:28 for the half-mile distance— and Addison Stevens of Westwood Hills Elementary in Waynesboro, who claimed the third-grade title in 3:47 over the half-mile course.

In the remaining boys’ races, Clymore’s Nicholas Sheets was first in 4:25 in the half-mile kindergarten race.  In the second-grade half-mile race, Anthony Dooms of Cassell was a one-second winner, taking the gold medal in 3:42, just one second ahead of silver-medalist Drew Shreckhise of Clymore.  Leo Vincent claimed the gold medal in the boys’ fourth-grade race, winning the one-mile event in 6:51.  And in the boys’ fifth-grade race, Alex Lightner of Staunton, who is home-schooled, covered the one-mile course in 6:34 for the win.
