Race Highlights and Pictures:

A soggy Saturday morning hardly dampened the spirits of local runners who showed in record numbers for the March Madness 5K. Despite steady rain throughout the morning, 64 total finishers—the most ever— completed the two-and-one-third laps of Gypsy Hill Park for the opening event of the spring and summer 5K race series hosted by the Blue Ridge Road Runners.

In what was essentially a two-man race from the opening gun, Lucas Moffett, an 18-year-old former Stuarts Draft distance standout, outdualed current R.E. Lee junior Dillon Sowers to claim the men’s overall title in 17:16. Near the mile-and-a-half mark, Moffett surged slightly on the back side of the park above the Kiwanis baseball fields and opened a 10-meter gap on Sowers that he gradually extended throughout the second half of the race. Sowers, 16, held on for second in 17:39, while Joe Rudmin, 43, of Harrisonburg was the overall bronze medalist in 19:11.

The women’s race was much more tightly contested with the top three finishers all within 19 seconds of each other. Maude Ariosa, 23, of Staunton covered the 3.1-mile course in 22:36. Caroline Perkins, 15, of Stuarts Draft was the silver medalist in 22:53, while Michelle Dennhardt, 43, also of Stuarts Draft, was the bronze medalist in 22:55.

The Blue Ridge Road Runners’ second 5K event of the summer, the Firecracker 5K, is set for 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, also in Gypsy Hill Park. Entry information is available at www.BlueRidgeRR.com.
