Race Highlights:
A record 200 finishers completed the two-and-one-third laps of Gypsy Hill Park in Friday’s 9th annual Firecracker 5K. The total was 41 greater than last year’s previous best turnout for any Independence Day race in the park.
Matt Bailey, a 20-year-old George Mason University sophomore from Weyers Cave, defended his 2007 title against a strong field of challengers by setting a blistering pace from the start. The victory marks the third time in the last four years that the former Fort Defiance distance star has won the Firecracker title. Bailey’s winning time of 15:54 was his best ever for the Gypsy Hill Park course and established a new men’s record by two seconds. Silver medalist Andy Sayers of Salem was 37 seconds behind Bailey in 16:31, while area distance standout Danny Fink, 45, who now resides in Morgantown, West Virginia, was the men’s bronze medalist in 16:42.
On the women’s side, Shelli Sayers of Salem, 29, reclaimed the Firecracker 5K title she also won in 2006 with at winning time of 20:29 that placed her 30th overall and was 59 seconds faster than her previous best time for the course. Fort Defiance senior Whitney Fulk was the silver medalist in 20:55, while Connie Peterson, 43, of Harrisonburg was the bronze medalist in 21:03.
Records also fell in the age division competitions as Lydia Denlinger (10 & under), Connie Peterson (37-45), and Debbie Will (46-55) all lowered the all-time best marks for their age groups. Matt Bailey (19-29), Andy Sayers (30-36), Danny Fink (37-45) and Robert Fitzgerald (56+) all lowered the marks in their respective men’s age divisions. Due to a computer problem that delayed the final results, awards will be mailed to the age division winner in the week following the race. The first-place finishers in each division will receive trophies, and the second- and third-place finishers will be getting medals.
The Blue Ridge Road Runner’s final 5K event of the summer will be the “Dog Days 5K” set for 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9th, also in Gypsy Hill Park.
